- Description: Run AI on your device or use private hosted AI with Typerelay. Learn where your text goes, how keystrokes stay local, and what you can verify in our open-source code.

Your saved replies, internal notes, and reusable snippets can contain details you would never put in a public document. Adding AI to a text expander makes one question especially important: where does your text go?

With Typerelay, you can choose AI that runs directly on your device or private AI included with eligible hosted accounts. Both help you work with reusable text, with clear boundaries around what gets processed and where.

**Your keystrokes never leave your device through Typerelay.** Using AI does not turn ordinary typing into a stream sent to a server. Text you deliberately submit for hosted AI, or save to a synchronized library, follows a separate, explicit path.

## Local AI: your writing stays on your device

Typerelay’s on-device AI lets you draft and refine snippets using a model running on your own computer. No web account, hosted AI subscription, or provider API key is needed.

Enable AI in the desktop settings, choose a local model, and download it. Once installed, the model processes your writing locally. The download needs an internet connection; generating and refining text does not.

For example, start with “Write a friendly reply explaining that we received the request and will follow up tomorrow.” In the local snippet editor, choose **Refine with AI** to turn that instruction into a draft. Or start with an existing reply and let the local model polish it. Review the result, undo it if you prefer your original, and save when you are ready.

Your instructions and draft stay on your device during that process. There is no remote AI request behind the local feature. Ordinary desktop search also runs locally, independently of AI.

You still control where the finished snippet lives. Keep it in a local-only library to keep it on that device. Save it to a synchronized library when you want it available elsewhere. Local AI keeps generation local; your library’s sync settings determine what happens when you save.

See the [on-device AI guide](https://docs.typerelay.com/desktop/local-ai?ref=typerelay.com) for setup and controls.

## Hosted private AI, with a clear infrastructure boundary

If you prefer the convenience of hosted AI, eligible Typerelay hosted accounts include the **Use private Typerelay AI** option. You can use the included service without setting up your own AI provider or downloading a model.

With this option, the text submitted for AI processing stays within the infrastructure we use to deliver Typerelay, including our private AI setup. We don't forward it to a separate AI provider’s API outside our service infrastructure.

This is hosted private AI, so the request travels from your device to our service infrastructure. Choose local AI when you want the AI processing itself to stay entirely on your computer.

We do not make customer content available to other customers and do not use that content to train models or improve our services.

You can select **Use private Typerelay AI** in the hosted web app under **Settings → AI**. All paid plans include the Typerelay private AI. You can also turn it on or off for each member. Besides, you can also BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) and use your provider.

## AI that helps with the text you choose

Typerelay’s AI integration is built around useful snippet workflows. In the web app, you can describe a new snippet, refine wording, translate text, or turn a one-off reply into a reusable template with fields. You review the proposal before applying and saving it.

Hosted AI search lets you describe what you need and find relevant snippets you already have permission to access. It processes your query and selected candidate excerpts to rank results. It does not need a live feed of what you type in other applications.

You can also connect your own supported AI provider. If you choose that route, the selected provider receives the text needed for your AI action, and its processing and retention terms apply. The privacy boundary described for private Typerelay AI applies when you select that included option.

## How we protect your data

Privacy depends on concrete behavior. Here are some of the boundaries built into Typerelay:

- **Keystrokes stay local.** Abbreviation recognition happens on your device. Ordinary typing and snippet expansion do not invoke a hosted AI provider.
- **Hosted AI runs when you request it.** Authoring sends your instructions and the snippet being worked on. AI search sends your query and candidate excerpts. Typerelay does not automatically collect the contents of your applications or browser pages for these requests.
- **Private libraries have access controls.** Other team members, including account owners and admins, cannot read another member’s private libraries through team management. Sharing a library is an explicit choice.
- **Provider keys stay protected.** Saved AI credentials are encrypted on the server and are not synchronized to client apps.
- **AI request records exclude your writing.** Typerelay records operational information such as request identifiers, workflow, usage counters, and completion state. Those records don't include your prompts, local text, or generated output. Snippets you choose to save are stored through the normal snippet workflow.
- **You can turn AI off.** Personal, team, and installation controls govern the relevant AI workflows. Local AI is opt-in. Regular snippet expansion and local search continue to work without it.

The [AI guide](https://docs.typerelay.com/guide/ai?ref=typerelay.com) explains hosted workflows and provider choices, and the [library guide](https://docs.typerelay.com/guide/libraries?ref=typerelay.com) explains sharing and access.

## Open source means you can inspect the implementation

Privacy claims should be open to scrutiny. Typerelay is [open source](https://github.com/typerelay/typerelay?ref=typerelay.com), so you can inspect how local inference works, what hosted AI requests contain, and how synchronization and access checks are implemented.

You can review the code yourself, ask your technical team to evaluate it, or run your own installation. Open source lets you examine our claims and ask questions about the implementation. We welcome that scrutiny.

Choose local AI for writing assistance on your own device. Choose private Typerelay AI for hosted convenience within our service infrastructure. Or keep AI disabled and use the text expansion and reusable snippets you already rely on.
